Dumfries itself is a University Town with the innovative Crichton Campus housing an offshoot of Glasgow University, The University of South-West Scotland, and The Bell College of Nursing on a shared semi-rural site. The Town itself has 2 Theatres (Theatre Royal and Brigend Theatre), 2 Cinemas (Odeon and Robert Burns Centre) and a modern Ice-Rink,3 Sports Centres (DG1, King George V and David Keswick Centre) and Swimming-pool (DG1) and 2 Fitness Centres (Bannatynes and DG1)not to mention numerous other cultural and athletic venues. The High Street of Dumfries is served by e.g. Marks and Spencer (Food Hall and Clothing), and a recently opened branch of Debenhams. Local Primary and Secondary schools rate well in National League tables. Golf courses are to be found in abundance, and Fishing (Solway Salmon and trout) and Sailing (Kippford and Rockcliffe) are a feature of the area. The overall quality and healthiness of life in Dumfries and Galloway is to be envied. We are not “Scotland`s best-kept secret” (Discover Scotland blurb) for nothing!
